Slow Mother Blog January 08 (for Japan)

Slow Mother Blog for the Sloth Club in Japan, January 2008.

It is raining. It has been raining for weeks around here. But it is warm, nurturing rain. Today is Sunday and Pacha, Yani and I are dry and well under the very large roof of our new shed in the forest in a place called Woombah in northern NSW. We are looking out to the Bundjalung forest (of the Yaegl Aboriginal people) with no walls to block our views and connection with nature.

Media release on Pension increase

MEDIA RELEASE - 24 OCTOBER 2007

Special pension needs in rural/regional Queensland.

The Greens policy to increase pensioner allowances to $30 a week is especially needed in regional north QLD, according to Anja Light, Australian 2nd Greens senate candidate for QLD.

“The Prime Minister is offering a paltry $8 per week increase to pensioners and Kevin Rudd stated that he ‘needs to look at the figures’. Both major parties voted against the Greens proposal for a $30 a week boost for pensions in August this year. “ said Ms. Light

Greens Candidates ‘connect’ with coal mining community.

North Queensland Greens candidates, Jenny Stirling, Peter Bell and Anja Light, claim they found a great deal of common ground on their visit to the coal mining town of Collinsville last Friday. Climate Change a Hot Topic in Dawson

Be the Change song/Severn Suzuki's message

Be the Change
By Pacha (age 6) and Anja Light, inspired by Severn Suzuki’s address to the UN Earth Summit in 1992 (see below for entire message).

I am only a child,
Yet I know we’re all part of one family -
We are all one.

I am only a child,
And I can’t understand why we waste so much -
While so many children go hungry.

Chorus.
If you really love us, if you really care
Please help us save the Earth.
If you really love us, if you really care
Please help us be the change.
- help us be the change

I am only a child,

Article for Windfarm magazine, Japan, September 2007

And the truth shall set us free...

I cannot remember a time that I did not want to make things better;to realise the full potential of all human beings to create life – not destroy it.

Climate Change - the coal link between Australia and Japan

'Coal Kills the Reef' - action in Tokyo

Yesterday (Aug 22) I held a press conference as a senate candidate in the media room of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) in Tokyo, Japan. My intention was to highlight climate change issues and ask for global cooperation in the urgent action needed. I focussed on the link between Australian coal exports to our biggest customer (Japan - 47%) and the threatened extinction of the Great Barrier Reef due to climate change caused by greenhouse emissions from burning of fossil fuels (such as coal). Please check out the image in the image gallery (Japan section) of the demo.

Politics of Hope - article in GECKO newsletter

Politics of Hope
By Anja Light

Al Gore, in the final credits of ‘An Inconvenient Truth’, lists suggestions on what you can do to respond to the crisis of global warming.

One is to vote for a politician who you believe will take real leadership on this issue and if there is no-one you believe will make a change – to run as a candidate yourself!

Many people are in even more denial and despair about the political situation than they are about climate change and cringe at the thought of having to drag themselves to a polling booth on election day.
